Who is Breakingthebold ?
Breakingthebold is a play on the name of my studio, Bold & Break. It's about two identities. Bold & Break is the professional, client-facing studio I run during the working day. Breakingthebold is the other side: free expression, unrestricted by briefs and deadlines. It's where I make work that lives outside those confines.
In everyday life, people call me Brian. I'm an artist, creative director and motion designer.
I've been drawn to lots of art forms since childhood: film, photography, animation, drawing, writing and graffiti. I got my first camera at 16 and started making experimental films. I went on to study Digital Media & Design, where I lost myself in digital art. The ability to build surreal, completely stylised worlds on a computer hooked me.
I would have loved to pursue art full-time, but I quickly learned how hard that path is without money or connections behind you. The skills I picked up in college built me a career in design, animation and advertising instead. Outside working hours, though, I never stopped making art. I created stills and animations rooted in my own experiences and ideas.
During lockdown in 2020, I was invited onto Async Art, a platform for selling digital art. Artists in the community had started selling their work as tokenised art, or NFTs. I uploaded a piece with low expectations, not fully understanding what it was. The next morning, my jaw dropped. A collector called Basileus had bought it. I'd never imagined selling my art, and suddenly it had happened.
More collectors followed, and my piece Brainfood became my best-known work. Over time, though, the space shifted. The hype around NFT collections grew louder and louder until it drowned out the artists themselves.
Lockdown ended and my artist career slowed down because of work and life. But the itch to sell my art was still there. After years of putting it off I've decided to make an attempt to sell my works in Physical format.
